Storms come across the water with little warning

Summer thunderstorms in the GTA occasionally carry hail, and when a cell tracks along the lakeshore, Long Branch takes it in the open. This is a neighbourhood where the car sleeps outside — at the curb on the numbered streets, in the Long Branch GO lot through the workday, in the lot at Marie Curtis Park on a Saturday. A hail burst rarely lasts ten minutes; at 30 °C with stones the size of a dime or bigger, that is long enough to pepper every horizontal surface on the street.

The damage concentrates where the stones land square: hood, roof, decklid, and the tops of the fenders. Most of it is dozens of shallow, round dents with the paint still intact — the metal moved but the finish survived. The worse cases add cracked clear coat at the centre of deeper strikes, and sometimes a chipped or cracked windshield. In Ontario, glass goes through comprehensive coverage with your normal deductible — there is no special zero-deductible glass rule here, whatever an out-of-province friend may have told you.

Counting the dents before promising anything

Hail repair starts with an honest inventory. Under proper shop lighting the panels are examined and the dents counted panel by panel, because the method depends on what each one actually is. Shallow dents with unbroken paint on accessible panels can usually be worked back out of the metal with the factory finish preserved. Strikes that cracked the paint or stretched the metal need filling and refinishing, blended to match. A hood or roof skin peppered edge to edge sometimes crosses the line where replacement is cheaper and better than rescuing it — and the estimate will say so plainly.

When a storm has hit the whole neighbourhood, every shop in the west end fills at once. Photos are how you get ahead of that: send them the same week, get a written estimate and a booked slot, and the car keeps driving until its turn comes — hail damage is cosmetic, not mechanical, so there is no rush into a bad queue. Refinished panels carry the lifetime paint warranty; replaced panels carry the parts-and-installation warranty.

A comprehensive claim, handled from our office

Hail is weather, so the claim runs through the comprehensive portion of your policy — no fault is assigned to you, because there is no one to assign it to. You pay your comprehensive deductible and your insurance company covers the rest of the repair. Drivers who carry only the mandatory coverages without comprehensive are paying out of pocket, and for them we write the same careful estimate and prioritize the panels that matter most, starting with any strike that broke the paint and opened the door to rust.

We open the claim, photograph and document every panel for the adjuster, and file a supplement if stripping trim reveals strikes the first inspection missed. If your policy includes loss-of-use coverage, a rental gets arranged to match your drop-off; either way we time the booking so the car comes up the 427 once, when parts and booth time are ready. Call (647) 594-3401 or send photos to start — Monday to Saturday, 8 AM to 7 PM, Sundays by appointment.

Good to know

Common questions

Straight answers before you commit to anything — and a human on the phone when you want one.

Will a hail claim make me look at fault or raise my rates?

Hail goes through comprehensive coverage and no fault is assigned — it is recorded as a weather event, not an accident you caused. What any claim does to future pricing is your insurance company’s decision, not ours to promise, but a comprehensive weather claim is treated differently from an at-fault collision. We will give you the repair number first so you can weigh it against your deductible before deciding.

My hood looks like a golf ball. Can it be saved, or does it need replacing?

It depends on density and depth, not appearance from a metre away. Dozens of shallow dents with intact paint can usually be worked out of the metal. Once strikes overlap, sit on the hood’s creases, or have cracked the paint across the panel, replacement and refinish is often the cheaper, better repair. We count the dents under shop light and price both routes before anything is decided.

The same storm cracked my windshield. Is that part of the claim?

Yes — glass broken by hail belongs to the same comprehensive claim as the body damage, subject to your normal deductible. Ontario has no special glass coverage rule, so what you pay depends entirely on your own policy. We document the windshield with the panel damage so the whole event is settled as one claim rather than two deductibles.
