Hail in Peel: rare enough to surprise, common enough to plan for

Southern Ontario’s summer thunderstorms carry hail more often than people remember, and every few years a cell tracking across Peel drops stones big enough to matter. The bands are narrow — one side of Mississauga can get pea-size bounce while another gets dented hoods — but where a storm lands, it lands on a city that parks outdoors. Heartland’s open lots, the employee and park-and-fly fields along the airport corridor, GO station lots, and the wide uncovered driveways of Churchill Meadows and Lisgar all leave sheet metal facing the sky.

Hail damage reads differently from any other kind: dozens of shallow, rounded dents across the horizontal panels — hood, roof, decklid — plus the tops of the fenders, often with cracked mirror caps or trim where the stones hit something brittle. From an angle in the driveway it can look minor. Under proper lighting, the true count is usually several times what the eye first catches.

Count first, quote second

The whole discipline of hail repair is in the assessment. We put the car under lighting that raises every dent, map the damage panel by panel, and photograph the count — because the difference between a fair settlement and a short one is whether anyone bothered to find all of it before the number was written. That documented map is what we put in front of your insurance company, and it is what keeps the scope from being argued mid-repair.

The repair itself is decided panel by panel. Shallow dents in reachable metal are worked back from behind and the panel refinished where the paint needs it; panels where the metal has stretched, creased, or cracked its paint are repaired conventionally or replaced. Aluminium hoods — common now — behave differently from steel and get called honestly, because a stretched aluminium panel rarely comes back for less than a new skin costs. Everything refinished is blended and covered by the lifetime paint warranty.

  • Full-panel damage map under proper lighting before any estimate
  • Photographic count submitted to your insurance company with the scope
  • Repair or replace decided per panel, aluminium called honestly
  • Blended refinish, lifetime warranty on the paint work

A comprehensive claim, and a schedule that is not underwater

Hail is a comprehensive claim, not collision — no fault is assigned, so the claim does not mark your driving record the way an at-fault collision would, and your comprehensive deductible applies. Ontario has no special hail rules beyond that; the practical questions are documentation and timing. Photograph the car soon after the storm, before parking-lot life adds unrelated dents to the file, and give your insurance company notice promptly.

Timing is where a shop outside the storm zone helps. When a cell hits Mississauga, every shop along its path books out at once; we sit 22 km east at Keele and Sheppard, off the storm track and holding our own schedule. Send photos to (647) 594-3401 the same week, and we set the assessment, agree the scope, and book the booth time while local queues are still forming. Rental through your coverage is timed to the drop-off, and hours run Monday to Saturday, 8 AM to 7 PM, Sundays by appointment.

Good to know

Common questions

Straight answers before you commit to anything — and a human on the phone when you want one.

Does hail damage go under collision or comprehensive coverage?

Comprehensive — hail is an act-of-weather claim, so no fault is assigned and your comprehensive deductible applies. It is a different bucket from an at-fault collision claim. We document the full damage map and run the claim with your insurance company from our office.

The dents are shallow and I barely see them. Can I just live with it?

You can, but know the costs of waiting: any dent that cracked paint will feed rust once salt season starts, and unrepaired hail damage surfaces at trade-in or private sale, where a buyer’s inspection finds every dent you stopped seeing. A photo assessment gives you the real scope so the decision is informed either way.

After the last storm every shop near me was booked for weeks. Why would you be different?

Because the storm did not hit our schedule. Hail books out shops in the damage path all at once; we are 22 km east of Mississauga, outside the band, taking the same claim with open booth time. Photos first, assessment booked within days, and the car makes one trip in on the 401.
