The Junction is harder on structure than it looks
This neighbourhood damages cars structurally without needing a highway. Keele, St. Clair, and Junction Rd are working truck routes feeding the industrial pockets that survived the Stockyards era, and pavement under truck axles fails early — the freeze–thaw window from February to April opens holes there deep enough that a wheel dropped in at 50 km/h can shift suspension mounting points without leaving a scratch on the paint. The raised curbing of the 512 streetcar right-of-way along St. Clair does similar quiet work: clip it turning early near Gunns Loop and the load travels straight through the wheel into the structure behind it.
The rail underpasses supply the third route to structural damage. Old Weston Rd’s narrow slot punishes any misjudgement with contact against curb or wall, and the compressed merges at each end produce collisions with more energy than their speed suggests, because there is nowhere to swerve. What all of these share is understatement. The car looks fine, or close to it — and then the steering wheel sits a few degrees off after an alignment, a door latches reluctantly, a panel gap runs wider on one side, or the front tires start wearing their inside shoulders. Those are structural symptoms, and they deserve measurement, not reassurance.
Measurement is the whole discipline
Nearly every vehicle parked on a Junction street is unibody: the body shell itself is the structure, engineered with crush zones that fold in a designed sequence.
