Why paint cares about temperature
The clear on a modern vehicle is a two-part urethane that hardens by crosslinking — resin and hardener locking together molecule by molecule. Like any chemical reaction, its speed rises and falls with temperature.
Push it below the product’s window and two failures stack up: the crosslinking crawls, and solvent gets trapped because it cannot escape a film that is skinning over too slowly. The result is paint that stays soft, loses gloss, grips poorly, and can sag or erupt in solvent pop — tiny craters where vapour finally forced its way out.
Refinish manufacturers publish exact temperature and humidity ranges, with different hardener and reducer speeds for different conditions. The craft is largely in respecting those numbers.
Winter air adds its own variable: once heated, it is extremely dry, which changes how fast solvents flash from the surface. That is why the reducer for a given day is chosen for that day’s conditions rather than grabbed from habit.
The metal’s temperature matters more than the air’s
Here is the detail that separates a professional booth from a driveway: what counts is not the thermometer on the wall, it is the temperature of the panel itself.
A car that just came off the road at -18 °C is a rolling block of cold steel. Spray it the moment it enters a warm shop and the paint lands on a surface far below its window — and worse, warm humid shop air condenses on the cold metal first, leaving a microscopic film of water underneath your new finish.
So the vehicle sits inside until it is warm all the way through before prep begins, and in deep winter that acclimatization is a genuine line in the schedule. It is one of the honest reasons a January job can run slightly longer than the same job in June.
Replacement parts get identical treatment. A fender that spent the morning in an unheated delivery truck is exactly as cold as the car was, and it warms up before anyone sands or sprays it.
What the downdraft booth actually controls
A downdraft booth is a sealed, heated, filtered room purpose-built for one process. Warm filtered air enters through the ceiling, sweeps down past the vehicle, and exits through floor grates — carrying dust and overspray away from wet paint rather than across it.
The heat holds the material inside its specified range from the first coat to the final bake, and the bake drives the film to a proper cure regardless of what the weather is doing outside the wall.

Where cold legitimately ruins results is work attempted outside a shop — mobile touch-ups, unheated garages, driveway resprays. The chemistry does not negotiate, and a GTA winter sits far outside every published window.
What never changes indoors: the colour match, the blend, the cure, the warranty. A shop that claims paint cannot be matched in winter is really telling you it does not own a booth.
