When a summer cell drops hail on Etobicoke’s open lots and driveways, Collision Auto Center maps the damage panel by panel under proper light, then repairs or replaces what the metal dictates. Storms cross Etobicoke first

Summer thunderstorms usually enter Toronto from the west, which makes Etobicoke the city’s front porch: a cell that builds over Mississauga crosses the 427 corridor before anyone downtown hears thunder. Most storms bring rain and noise and nothing more. But a few minutes of hail is all it takes, and the district keeps an enormous number of cars outdoors to receive it — the driveways of Alderwood and Eringate, the commuter rows at the Kipling hub, the open lots around Centennial Park, and every plaza along The Queensway.

Hail damage is deceptive in the first hour. On a dark car under an overcast sky you might count five dents; the same panel under a raking light shows forty. So the first thing we do is map the car properly — panel by panel, light held low across the surface — before anyone talks numbers. The hood, roof, and decklid take the worst because they face the sky; upper door sections catch the wind-driven stones. An accurate count up front is what keeps the claim from being argued twice.

Repair follows the metal, not a formula

Shallow, round dents in reachable panels can often be worked back from behind until the surface reads true, preserving the factory finish. Where a stone hit hard enough to stretch the steel, crack the paint, or land on a bodyline, that panel needs conventional repair — filled, blocked, and refinished — and a roof peppered past a certain density is more honestly replaced than rescued. You get told which category each panel falls into and why, because a hail estimate should read like a map of your car, not one mysterious number.

Refinished panels are colour-matched against the car as it stands and blended into their neighbours, with the lifetime paint warranty behind the work. One Etobicoke-specific note: a storm wide enough to hit the whole district fills every shop in the west end at once. Photos by text put you in our schedule the same day, and because parts and colour are sorted before drop-off, your car spends its time here being repaired rather than waiting in a lot.

The claim: comprehensive, with your normal deductible

Hail is a comprehensive claim, not a collision claim — no fault to determine, no other driver involved. You pay your comprehensive deductible and your insurance company covers the rest of the repair. If hail also cracked the windshield, that glass runs through the same comprehensive coverage with your normal deductible; Ontario has no special zero-deductible glass rule. And if you carry no comprehensive coverage, the repair is out of pocket — we price it in plain Canadian dollars, panel by panel, so you can decide what is worth doing.

We open and run the claim from our office: documentation, the adjuster, and the supplement if the count grows once the car is inspected in person under proper light. Skipping the repair carries its own cost — hail scars show plainly at trade-in and on a private sale, and a later claim gets complicated when old and new damage share the same panels. Drop-off is in the Keele and Sheppard area: 427 north, 401 east, roughly 15 to 24 minutes. Hours run 8 AM to 7 PM Monday through Saturday, Sundays by appointment — (647) 594-3401.

Common questions

Straight answers before you commit to anything — and a human on the phone when you want one.

Will a hail claim count against me the way an at-fault collision does?

Hail goes through comprehensive coverage with no fault assigned to you, which puts it in a different category from an at-fault collision. How any claim affects your renewal depends on your policy and your insurance company, so we will not promise otherwise — what we do is document the damage tightly so the claim is clean, and give you an out-of-pocket figure so you can weigh both paths.

My car caught hail near Centennial Park but I only see a few small dents. Is an assessment worth it?

Yes, and soon. Hail counts triple under proper light — what looks like four dents in your driveway is routinely dozens once the panel is checked with light raked across it. Even if you decide not to repair now, a documented count dated to the storm protects you later, when new damage or a sale forces the question of what happened when.

The same storm cracked my windshield. Is that a separate claim from the dents?

Same event, same comprehensive coverage — the glass is handled with your normal deductible because Ontario has no zero-deductible glass rule. Practically, it usually rolls into one hail claim with one deductible, which is worth confirming with your insurance company. We document the glass alongside the panels so nothing gets treated as a second incident.
