A neighbourhood that sleeps outdoors

Leaside has garages; it just does not park in them. The detached garages behind the houses off McRae and Sutherland were built for cars two sizes smaller and now store bikes, tools, and hockey nets — so when a July thunderstorm cell tracks across the Don Valley, nearly every vehicle in the neighbourhood is out in it, on a driveway or at the curb. The maple canopy helps some streets and betrays others: branches knock hailstones down at odd angles, and the same storm that dents a roof can drop a limb across a hood.

GTA hail is usually brief and patchy — one band of streets peppered, three blocks over untouched. The dents concentrate on horizontal surfaces: roof, hood, deck lid, the top edges of the fenders. In low light they can be almost invisible, which is why the first thing we do is examine the car under proper lighting that shows every strike. You cannot claim, or repair, what has not been counted.

The claim: comprehensive, no fault, one deductible

Hail is nobody’s fault, and the insurance system treats it that way: it falls under your comprehensive coverage, not collision, and no fault determination is involved. You pay your comprehensive deductible; your insurance company pays the rest of a covered repair. Notify them promptly — the policy expects notice within seven days of discovering the damage — and then hand the file to us. We document every panel with photographs, prepare the damage report the adjuster needs, and meet the adjuster here if they want to see the car.

One warning from experience: after a well-publicized storm, out-of-town “hail teams” appear in parking lots across the city offering fast cash repairs. Ontario law lets you choose any repair shop, and that cuts both ways — choose one that will still exist when a warranty question comes up. Our repairs are warranted for as long as you own the vehicle, from a building that does not move.

How the repair itself gets done

Every hail job starts with a panel-by-panel map: how many strikes, how deep, whether the paint surface cracked, and whether the panel is steel or aluminum — many newer hoods are aluminum, which behaves differently under repair. Shallow dents in accessible metal are worked back to shape; panels with dozens of deep strikes, or dents that fractured the finish, are repaired and refinished or, where the math favours it, replaced. The estimate spells out which path each panel takes and why.

Refinished surfaces are colour-matched to your code, blended, and covered by the lifetime paint warranty; replaced panels carry the parts-and-installation warranty. Timing is flexible in a way collision work is not — hail damage does not worsen quickly unless paint is cracked — so we can schedule the repair around your week. The drive from Leaside is the usual 17 to 25 minutes up Bayview or the Allen, and a rental through your coverage bridges the booth days.

Common questions

Straight answers before you commit to anything — and a human on the phone when you want one.

Will a hail claim raise my insurance rates?

Hail falls under comprehensive coverage and carries no fault, which insurance companies treat differently from at-fault collision claims. We cannot promise what any company does at renewal — pricing is theirs — but a comprehensive hail claim is not an at-fault mark on your record.

The dents are small and I barely see them. Can I just leave the hail damage?

If the paint is unbroken, the risk is mostly financial rather than mechanical — but note it now anyway. Report the damage to your insurance company promptly even if you repair later, photograph everything, and remember that unrepaired hail comes off the value at trade-in. If any strike cracked the finish, repair it before winter salt finds the opening.

My car is older — will hail damage total it?

It can, because dozens of panels priced for repair add up fast against an older vehicle’s actual cash value. Ontario has no fixed percentage; the insurance company runs the economics. If a total loss is likely, we tell you early and explain the offer, so you decide with real numbers instead of hope.
