A town with nowhere to hide from a storm
Summer thunderstorm cells track across Durham a few times every year, and when one drops hail it catches Ajax in a uniquely exposed position. The subdivisions north of Rossland and Taunton are young — the trees planted with them are decades away from sheltering anything — and the double garages underneath them are full of everything except cars. Add the Ajax GO lot, where hundreds of vehicles sit in open rows from early morning to evening, and a ten-minute storm can write hundreds of repair bills before it moves out over the lake.
Hail damage is deceptive in both directions. In flat light a peppered hood can look nearly fine, then show every strike the moment the sun angles across it; conversely, a car that looks ruined may carry mostly shallow, repairable dents. The honest assessment happens panel by panel under proper lighting, counting and mapping the strikes, separating dents that can be worked out from those where the paint fractured — because a cracked chip on a hood in a Durham salt town is a rust seed, not just a blemish.
How hail repair actually proceeds
The repair plan follows the map. Shallow dents in accessible metal are massaged back to shape while the factory finish stays untouched — the best outcome for the car’s value and the most common one when stones were small. Deeper strikes, creased edges, and any dent where paint cracked get conventional repair: metal work, primer, refinish, and a blend into the neighbouring area so the panel reads as one surface. Aluminum hoods, common on newer SUVs in every Ajax driveway, behave differently from steel and are assessed accordingly.
Where the damage overwhelms a panel — a roof skin dimpled edge to edge, a hood with strikes stacked on strikes — replacement can beat repair on both cost and quality, and we price the comparison rather than defaulting either way. Every refinished panel leaves under the lifetime paint warranty, and replacements carry parts-and-installation coverage. Glass takes its own check: cracked windshields and shattered mirror caps ride the same comprehensive claim as the dents.
- Panel-by-panel strike map under proper light before any number is final
- Factory finish preserved where dents allow; refinish and blend where paint broke
- Repair-versus-replace priced honestly on heavily hit panels
- Glass and trim damage folded into the same claim
The claim, the queue, and the 401 between us
Hail lands under comprehensive coverage — the not-at-fault side of your policy — with your normal deductible; Ontario applies no special glass or hail rules. After a storm crosses Durham, every local shop books out at once, which is where the geography flips in your favour: our North York schedule does not surge with an Ajax storm, so the car gets into process instead of a queue. Notify your insurance company promptly, send us photos of each damaged surface, and the estimate and claim start the same day.
The drive happens once. We time the appointment before you leave Ajax, book the rental through your coverage for the drop-off morning, and run all adjuster conversations from our office until the car is done. If the storm also cracked the windshield badly enough to make the trip unwise, tell us; a tow can be arranged, and under Ontario rules our shop can be its named destination. Hours are 8 AM to 7 PM Monday through Saturday, Sundays by appointment.
