MQB bodies are full of hot-formed boron steel
The Golf, Jetta, Tiguan and Atlas all ride on Volkswagen’s MQB platform, and one of its defining traits is how much hot-formed boron steel runs through the passenger cell — the tunnel, B-pillars, rocker reinforcements and front bulkhead area. Boron steel is formed and quenched in the press, and the moment a torch or a puller touches it, the strength that process created is gone for good.
The saving grace is that Volkswagen documents its bodies unusually well. The repair manuals name where a rail may be sectioned, which joints are welded, which are bonded and riveted, and which assemblies are replacement-only — so the manual decides the plan, not a technician’s hunch. We measure on the laser system first, work to the published joints, measure again, and hand you both sets of readings with the invoice. An estimate that ignores that manual is a choice, not an oversight.
The badge on the grille belongs to the driver assistance system
On IQ.Drive-equipped Volkswagens, adaptive cruise and front assist read from a windshield camera and a radar mounted centrally at the nose — usually behind the badge or low in the grille. That badge is engineered to be transparent to radar. Swap it for a heavier aftermarket piece or a differently plated one, and the sensor can lose range without ever setting a fault code, which is a quiet way for a safety margin to disappear on the Gardiner.
That risk is much of why our parts default is OEM and why we argue the point on estimates. Every Volkswagen gets scanned before teardown and after reassembly, the camera is calibrated to procedure whenever the glass or bracket moves, front radar aim is addressed after fascia work, and park sensors and the rear camera are function-checked before delivery. None of it shows in the finished car — which is exactly why it all gets written down and handed to you.
ID.4 work starts with the high-voltage system
The ID.4 carries its battery flat in the floor between the axles, turning the rockers, floor sections and underbody into the pack’s protection rather than ordinary sheet metal. Before any welding, grinding, cutting or pulling, the high-voltage system is shut down and left to discharge, and lifting happens only at Volkswagen’s specified points so no hoist arm ever loads a battery tray.
The rest of an ID.4 repair looks familiar — panels, alignment, refinish — but the inspection list is longer. Pack case condition, mount integrity and coolant routing all get examined where the impact landed, and anything questionable goes to you and your insurance company in writing. Nothing gets buried under a new quarter panel because raising it would be inconvenient. An electric car leaving this shop has a documented battery inspection behind it.
