The Audi Space Frame is not a steel unibody wearing aluminum

Audi has built multimaterial bodies longer than almost anyone — the A8’s Space Frame mixes aluminum extrusions and castings with hot-formed steel, magnesium and carbon reinforcement in one structure, while the Q5, A4 and A6 use aluminum selectively for closures and front-end components. A single crushed corner can therefore involve three materials, each demanding its own joining method. Assuming an Audi is a steel car with aluminum skins is the most common way one of these repairs goes wrong.

Aluminum sections rivet and bond rather than spot weld, extrusions have defined cut points or none at all, and heat is never a tool on this kind of structure. During teardown we identify what each damaged member actually is, pull Audi’s procedure for it, and quote from that document. Laser readings bracket any structural correction and ship with the invoice — and where a section is simply not repairable, you hear it on day one rather than as bad news on day ten.

The four rings sit in front of the radar

Audi pre sense reads from a windshield camera and radar behind the Singleframe grille — on many models directly behind the rings, which are built as a radar-transparent cover. Side assist units hide behind the rear bumper corners. A parking-garage tap on an A4’s rear bumper and a Bayview Avenue rear-ender both put sensors out of position, and neither necessarily lights a warning on the drive home.

Every Audi here is scanned before teardown and after reassembly, with both reports filed and shared with your insurance company. Genuine Audi parts are specified for grilles, emblems and covers with sensors behind them, brackets return to their original locations, and the calibrations Audi publishes for the work performed are completed before release. Audi drivers eventually notice adaptive cruise behaving differently — by which point the car has usually been out of some other shop for weeks.

Audi colour: flat greys and deep pearls, both unforgiving

Audi’s signature palette runs to two extremes that punish shortcuts equally. The flat greys — Nardo Gray and its relatives — carry almost no metallic to hide anything, so every wave in a repaired panel and every variation in film build reads at a glance. The deep pearls and layered reds go the other way, floating translucent colour over a base where the pass count decides how dark the panel lands.

Both get the same discipline here: bodywork brought truly flat before primer, a spray-out card built exactly the way the car will be sprayed, comparison under booth light and outside in daylight, and colour blended into the neighbouring panels so no edge survives at the door gap. The refinish carries our lifetime paint warranty for as long as the Audi is yours — regardless of where the car was bought.

Common questions

Straight answers before you commit to anything — and a human on the phone when you want one.

Can an aluminum Audi fender be repaired?

It depends on the damage. Aluminum can be worked, but it hardens as it moves, cracks where steel would stretch, and cannot be heated to relax a crease. We assess against Audi’s procedure for that panel and price repair and replacement side by side so you can choose.

Does Nardo Gray need a full panel refinish?

Usually the panel plus a blend into the neighbours. A flat grey has no metallic to disguise a transition, so a spot repair tends to read as a patch. We are straight with you about which panels come into the blend before any work starts.

How do I get an Audi estimate without driving in?

Send photos of the damage and the owner comes back with a written number fast. If teardown later reveals more underneath — common on Audis, where the material mix hides damage — we document it with photographs and handle the supplement with your insurance company directly.

Honestly, I thought my car would never look the same again — but they completely proved me wrong. I couldn’t even tell where the damage had been repaired or repainted. The paint matched perfectly, and the bodywork was flawless.
