Underground is armour — until the day you were driving
Downtown is probably the best-protected place in the GTA to own a car during a hailstorm: the towers park their residents beneath concrete, and a storm can cross the city without touching them. The damage happens to the exceptions. Cars on the street-permit blocks of Kensington, Harbord Village, and the east-side laneways. Cars in open Green P lots. And, most often, cars that were simply in motion when the cell arrived — crossing the Gardiner, queuing on Lake Shore, or halfway up the DVP with nowhere to shelter.
Toronto hail is occasional rather than annual, which is exactly why it blindsides people. It also hides well: dozens of shallow dents across a roof and hood can be genuinely invisible under a flat grey sky, then leap out the first evening low sun rakes the panels. The count matters more than any single dent — five panels of minor strikes add up to a substantial repair — and hail that has chipped paint is on a timer, because the next salt season will find every chip.
The claim is comprehensive, and that works in your favour
Hail is not a collision claim. It runs under comprehensive coverage: no other driver, no fault assigned under any rules, just your comprehensive deductible and the repair. Two cautions come with that. Comprehensive is optional in Ontario, so confirm it is actually on your policy before assuming — a policy carrying only the mandatory coverages leaves hail as an out-of-pocket decision, and we will price the work honestly for that decision. And notify your insurance company promptly either way; Ontario policies expect notice within seven days of discovering damage.
Where hail claims bog down is almost always the first estimate. A photo taken from above in flat light misses half the strikes, the low number gets approved, and then the repair stalls in supplement rounds while the car sits. We do the opposite: the car comes in once, every panel goes under angled lighting, each dent is counted and mapped, and your insurance company receives one estimate that covers the entire storm. From there the adjuster deals with us, not with you.
How the metal actually gets repaired
Method follows what the storm did. Shallow strikes in accessible steel are worked back to shape from behind the panel. Deeper hits that stretched the metal or broke the paint are filled, refinished, and blended. A roof hammered hard enough may be more honestly replaced than massaged — we price both routes and recommend the one we would pick for our own car. Aluminum hoods, common across the core’s newer SUVs, respond differently than steel and are assessed on their own terms. Every refinished panel carries the lifetime paint warranty.
After a storm, queue position is worth more than urgency later, so send photos the day you find the damage and we book the in-person mapping immediately. Drop-off runs 8 AM to 7 PM Monday to Saturday with Sundays by appointment, Line 1 from Sheppard West station carries you back downtown, and if your coverage includes a rental we align its dates with the booth schedule so the car is not away a day longer than the repair requires.
