Highway 7, Weston Rd, and the traffic Woodbridge actually fights

The west side of Vaughan funnels through a handful of choke points, and each writes its own damage. Highway 7 between Islington and the 400 is a wall of big-box driveways — the Costco side, the Colossus theatre lot, plaza after plaza — and drivers braking for an entrance they nearly missed are how rear bumpers meet front ones at 30 km/h. Weston Rd stacks up the same way at every light between Langstaff and Rutherford. And the 400 interchange at Rutherford, squeezed by mall and Wonderland traffic half the year, backs its ramp queues onto the road itself, where a moment of ramp-watching instead of brake-light-watching produces the classic tap.

Two newer facts change the picture at the edges. The 427 extension up to Major Mackenzie put genuine highway speed on Woodbridge’s western flank, so the hits that come off it are harder than the old Highway 27 fender-benders — more energy, more hidden structural questions. Meanwhile the old village core still funnels everything down Woodbridge Ave and Islington through tight, angled intersections beside the Humber, where sight lines are short and left turns get taken on faith. Different roads, different physics — but all of it ends up as bodywork.

Wide driveways, full driveways — and a lot of working steel

Housing here means driveways, and driveways here mean fleets. A Sonoma Heights or Weston Downs interlock pad routinely holds three or four vehicles — the commuter cars, the pickup that earns the mortgage, sometimes the trailer behind it — and vehicles shuffled nose-to-tail every morning collect the small stuff: a tailgate backed into a mirror, a fender kissed by a trailer jack, a door swung into the truck parked half a metre away. Add winter and the plow, which seals every driveway mouth with a frozen windrow that eats bumper lips and air dams until March.

The trades angle matters for repairs, not just colour. A landscaper’s or contractor’s pickup cannot sit in a shop queue for a month, so we scope those jobs from photos, order parts before the truck arrives, and book the work around the vehicle’s earning schedule where the repair allows it. Salt does its usual Ontario work underneath everything — chips on leading edges becoming rust freckles, scraped rockers bubbling by spring — and a driveway-parked town gets no shelter from any of it. Fixing broken paint before the salt season, not after, is the cheapest advice we give Woodbridge.
