EyeSight is a stereo camera, and stereo geometry is unforgiving
Subaru’s EyeSight system judges distance the way your eyes do — by comparing two views. Its twin colour cameras sit at the top of the windshield, one each side of the mirror, and the separation and angle between them has to be exactly what Subaru set at the factory. Replace the glass, nudge the bracket, or remove the assembly for any reason, and adaptive cruise and pre-collision braking cannot be trusted until the system is recalibrated.
Subaru publishes the full calibration procedure — targets, distances, the conditions the space must meet — and that is what we follow. Every Subaru is scanned on arrival and after reassembly, and the car does not leave until EyeSight arms normally instead of flashing a temporarily-unavailable message on the first cold morning. That message shows up often enough after careless glass work that Toronto owners blame the weather, when the real culprit is a camera nobody bothered to calibrate.
Rear radar and the bumper cover in front of it
Blind spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert on an Outback, Forester or Ascent work through radar units tucked behind the rear bumper corners. The factory cover is engineered to be transparent to them, which makes everything layered on top of it consequential: heavy paint film build, an aftermarket cover in a different plastic, or a thick protective wrap can all soften the return the sensor depends on.
It fails quietly — the warning light simply stops coming on for a car that genuinely is in your blind spot. So rear bumper work on a Subaru means genuine parts where a sensor is involved, film build controlled during refinish, brackets returned to their original positions, and a function check on both sides before handover. Ten minutes proving a sensor works beats you discovering it does not while merging onto the 401 at Keele.

Symmetrical all-wheel drive changes what a corner hit involves
Every Subaru except the BRZ drives all four wheels through a driveline laid straight down the centreline of the car. That layout is why half of cottage country drives one up Highway 400 in January — and it also means a side or corner impact can load the drivetrain in ways a front-drive hatchback never would. Driveshaft angles, subframe position and suspension geometry are checked as part of the structural inspection here, not discovered later as a vibration.
The Subaru Global Platform also carries far more hot-stamped steel and structural adhesive than the cars it replaced, so quarters, rockers and rails have defined replacement and sectioning points rather than open ones. We measure on the laser system first, cut only at published joints, and re-measure after the pull so the alignment bay is not chasing a shell that was never brought back to spec. The readings stay in your file — that paper trail is what keeps the repair defensible years later, including at resale.
