At the roadside
Deer strikes around the GTA cluster on the exurban roads — King, Caledon, Uxbridge, the concession roads north of Aurora — and they peak at dawn and dusk in the fall, exactly when other drivers can least see you on a dark shoulder. Get the car entirely off the pavement, hazards on, and if the hood is buckled or steam is rising, keep clear of the front end.
Report it even though no other driver is involved. A call to police, or a stop at a Collision Reporting Centre if you are directed there, creates the dated record that makes the comprehensive claim straightforward — and if damage looks likely to pass $5,000, reporting is required, not optional.
- Photograph the vehicle, the animal, and the stretch of road
- Check the grille for hair or hide — it documents the strike
- Look under the car for fluid before driving on
- Confirm both headlights work and the hood still latches
- Call for a tow if a lamp is out after dark or the hood will not stay shut
Why deer damage is a comprehensive claim
Comprehensive coverage exists for losses that are not a driver striking a vehicle or object: fire, theft, vandalism, hail, falling branches — and animal strikes. Hitting a deer sits squarely inside it, which is why there is no fault to argue about and why these files usually open and close quickly.
One wrinkle catches people every year. Swerve to miss the deer and hit a guardrail, a tree, or the ditch instead, and the loss becomes a collision claim with your collision deductible, because the car struck an object rather than the animal. If your two deductibles differ, describe exactly what happened when you open the claim.
What deer-strike repair involves
A deer at 80 km/h does more than dent a hood. The grille, bumper cover, absorber, and radiator support carry the load, headlamps crack or pop their tabs, and the hood commonly buckles along its leading edge. On many newer vehicles, the forward radar or camera for the driver-assist systems lives directly behind that grille.
We rebuild the front structure to factory specification, replace what cannot safely be repaired, and refinish with a computerized colour match blended into the fenders so the new hood does not announce itself. Cooling-system and mechanical damage goes to a mechanical specialist — that part is not work we do in-house, and we say so plainly.
- Grille, bumper cover, absorber, and reinforcement bar
- Radiator support and the hood latch mechanism
- Headlamp housings and their mounting tabs
- Forward radar and camera mounts for driver-assist systems
- Hood, fender edges, and the alignment of every front gap
Getting the estimate started
October through December fills GTA shop schedules with exactly this damage, so sending photos early protects your spot. A full front shot, a close-up of the grille area, and a wide shot of the whole car are enough for a free written estimate with a real number on it.
If the car came home on a flatbed, call (647) 594-3401 — we help arrange the tow into North York and open the comprehensive claim with you in the same conversation. The estimate comes with a written timeline before you ever hand over the keys.
