Willowdale splits into two kinds of hail luck
When a summer thunderstorm crosses the GTA with hail in it, Willowdale divides neatly. Cars asleep in the underground garages along Yonge never know it happened. Cars in the open take the hit: driveways and street permits on the bungalow blocks, surface visitor parking behind the towers, and every vehicle that was simply out — on the 401, in a lot near Mel Lastman Square, waiting at a light on Finch. Hail in Toronto is occasional rather than annual, which is exactly why it catches people without a plan.
The damage is deceptive in both directions. Small, shallow dents across a roof and hood can be nearly invisible until low sun rakes across the panel — then there are forty of them. And dents that look trivial individually add up to a substantial repair when they cover five panels. The one mistake to avoid is doing nothing about hail that has chipped or cracked the paint: opened paint plus a Toronto winter of road salt equals corrosion by spring, and a straightforward comprehensive claim becomes a bigger repair nobody covers as readily.
A comprehensive claim, not a collision claim
Insurance treats hail differently from a crash, and mostly in your favour. Hail is a comprehensive claim: no other driver, no fault assigned under any rules, just your comprehensive deductible and the repair. Notify your insurance company promptly — Ontario policies expect notice within seven days of discovering damage — and note that comprehensive is optional coverage, so it pays to confirm you have it before assuming. If your policy is written only with the mandatory coverages, hail repair becomes an out-of-pocket decision, and we will price it honestly for that decision.
Where hail claims go sideways is the estimate. A photo from above in flat light misses half the dents, and a low first number means supplements, delays, and a car that sits. We do it once instead: the vehicle comes in, every panel is examined under angled lighting, each dent is counted and mapped, and the estimate your insurance company receives reflects the whole storm. From there we deal with the adjuster directly — you are not the messenger.
After the storm: how the repair itself runs
Repair method follows the metal. Shallow dents in accessible panels are worked back to shape; deeper strikes that stretched the steel or broke the paint get filled, refinished, and blended, and a roof peppered hard enough may be better replaced than massaged — we price the options and recommend the one we would choose on our own car. Aluminum hoods, common on newer SUVs parked all over Willowdale, behave differently from steel and are assessed accordingly. Whatever is refinished carries the lifetime paint warranty.
Storms create queues, so claim position matters. Send photos the day you notice the damage and we schedule the in-person assessment immediately; hours are 8 AM to 7 PM Monday to Saturday, Sundays by appointment, and the 84 bus along Sheppard covers your trip home after drop-off. If a rental is in your coverage, we line its dates up with the booth schedule so the car is not sitting apart from you a day longer than the repair needs.
