Rare enough to surprise you, real enough to dent steel

Toronto is not hail country the way the Prairies are, and that is exactly why a hail event here catches so many cars in the open. The GTA’s summer thunderstorms occasionally drop a cell with hail in it — usually brief, sometimes very local, and always arriving with too little warning to do anything about the car in the driveway. North York’s housing stock makes it worse: the postwar streets of Downsview and Bathurst Manor have single-car garages long since converted to storage, the condo corridors along Sheppard leave second cars in open visitor lots, and every commuter lot near the subway stations is an unprotected field of horizontal sheet metal.

Hail damage has a signature. The dents concentrate on horizontal surfaces — roof, hood, trunk lid, the top edges of the fenders — and they arrive by the dozen, shallow and round, often without breaking paint. Harder stones crack windshields, split plastic trim, and chip paint on the leading edges. The full count is rarely visible in a driveway glance; hail dents show up properly only under angled light, which is why our assessment happens panel by panel under lamps, not in the parking lot with a squint.

A hail claim is a comprehensive claim — and that changes the conversation

Hail is not a collision. It falls under the comprehensive portion of your policy, with your comprehensive deductible, and there is no fault to assign — no other driver, no Fault Determination Rules, no DCPD question. That tends to make hail claims cleaner than accident claims, but the process still rewards doing things in order: notify your insurance company promptly, photograph the car where it sat if you can, and get a proper damage count before anyone settles on a number, because a settlement written from three driveway photos will miss half the dents.

We run the claim from our side the way we run any file: written assessment, direct conversation with the adjuster, supplements if the teardown or the lamps reveal damage the first pass missed. One honest warning we give every hail customer — on an older vehicle with widespread damage, the repair math can approach the car’s actual cash value, and the insurance company may steer the file toward a total-loss settlement. There is no fixed Ontario percentage for that call. We tell you early which way your numbers lean so the decision is yours to make with open eyes.

What the repair actually involves

There is no single fix for hail because no two panels take it the same way. Shallow dents in workable locations are massaged back and the surface trued. Panels with dense, overlapping strikes — a roof that took the worst of the cell — are often better replaced than worked, because metal peppered with fifty dents no longer behaves like flat steel. Cracked mouldings and split trim get replaced, chipped paint gets refinished, and any panel we spray is colour-matched to your code, checked against the car’s weathered finish, and blended so the repair has no visible boundary. The refinish carries our lifetime paint warranty; replacement parts carry a parts-and-installation warranty.

Logistics stay simple. Send photos to (647) 594-3401 for a first read, then book the car in for the real count under lights — it takes less time than most people expect. We are off Keele just south of Sheppard, open 8 AM to 7 PM Monday through Saturday with Sundays by appointment. If a storm has just gone through, book promptly: hail events fill every shop’s calendar in the same week, and early files get the earliest bench time.

Common questions

Straight answers before you commit to anything — and a human on the phone when you want one.

Will a hail claim make my premiums go up?

Hail is a comprehensive claim with no fault attached to you, which is generally treated differently from an at-fault collision. How it affects your renewal depends on your insurance company and your policy history, so ask them directly — and get our written damage assessment first, so you are weighing the claim against a real number.

The dents are small and the paint is not broken. Can I just ignore them?

Mechanically, unbroken paint means no rust risk, so ignoring cosmetic hail is a legitimate choice. The catch is resale: hail history is visible to any careful buyer, and an unrepaired car sells like one. If you carry comprehensive coverage, it is at least worth pricing the repair against your deductible before deciding.

My car was hailed on outside the GTA — at a cottage, say. Does that matter?

No. Comprehensive coverage follows the car, not the city where the storm happened. Report it to your insurance company as usual, bring the car to us in North York, and the claim proceeds the same way it would if the storm had crossed Keele and Sheppard.
