From most of Markham the route is muscle memory: Highway 7 or 16th Ave over to the 404, south past the 407 interchange, then the 401 west two exits to Keele. In normal traffic that is 20 to 30 minutes; from the Milliken side, Steeles Ave runs crosstown and skips the highways entirely. Drivers who carry a 407 ETR transponder have a quieter option — the toll route west to Keele, then straight south through Concord to Sheppard, which stays flat even when the 404 is stacked from Highway 7 down.

Markham’s damage has a geography. The malls supply the rest: Pacific Mall’s garage is famously tight around its pillars, First Markham Place fills past its lot lines on weekends, and Markville’s rows produce the usual crop of backed-into fenders. On Main St Unionville the damage is gentler but constant — door edges and mirrors traded between cars squeezed against the curb on festival weekends.

The seasons add their own list. Wide driveways in Wismer and Berczy end in plough windrows every January, and forcing a bumper through one scrapes the cover and packs ice behind it. Cornell’s rear laneways trade the windrow problem for garage-post scrapes in tight rear lanes.
