Can any body shop repair a Tesla?
Quick answer
No — not every repair, and not everywhere. Tesla operates an approved collision program plus its own body shops, and structural work, high-voltage battery service, and certain parts flow through that network. An independent shop can properly handle a real range of cosmetic and bolt-on work where parts and procedures are available. The truthful answer always depends on the specific damage.

How Tesla organizes collision work
Tesla runs an approved collision program with training, tooling, and equipment requirements it defines, alongside body shops it owns outright — several of each operate across the GTA. Approval governs what a shop is authorized to perform and, practically, what it can obtain.
The network holds several keys. High-voltage battery service and pack handling are restricted. Certain structural operations — above all on models built around giant castings and structural packs — have procedures Tesla does not release generally, or that demand tooling and authorization the program controls.
Parts form the other gate. A large fraction of Tesla components sell only through Tesla’s channel, with availability to outside shops varying by part and by year, and diagnostic and configuration software access is similarly limited.
What an independent shop can genuinely take on
A lot of Tesla damage is ordinary damage. Covers, lamps, mirrors, liners, and other bolt-ons come off and go on conventionally, and painting a Tesla panel uses the same measurement, blending, and booth discipline as painting anything else.
The sweet spot for an independent shop is non-structural panel work and refinish — wherever the parts can be sourced and the published procedure for the operation is in hand.
What an independent shop should decline: anything touching the high-voltage pack, structural repair involving castings or the battery-integrated floor, and any operation whose procedure the manufacturer withholds. Taking those jobs anyway is how cars end up stranded half-finished.
Questions worth putting to any shop before your Tesla stays there:
- Are you in Tesla’s approved program, or independent?
- Can you actually source the parts this repair needs, and on what timeline?
- Do you hold the published procedure for this exact operation on this model?
- If teardown reveals structural or battery involvement, what happens then?
- Will any stage of this repair need finishing somewhere else?
- Who performs the calibrations, and do I receive the scan reports?

You get that verdict at the estimate, while the car is still yours to place. We would far rather point you to the right door on day one than sit on a vehicle we cannot complete.
Figuring out which case is yours
The dividing lines are structural versus cosmetic, and battery versus everything else. As a rough sorting guide — confirmed by someone actually looking at the car:
- Scuffed or cracked cover, mirror cap, trim — routine independent-shop work
- One-panel dent or scratch, no structure involved — routine, parts permitting
- Door, fender, or liftgate swap — usually workable, hinging on parts access
- Any rocker, floor, or underbody strike — pack evaluation first, likely the network
- High-voltage warnings, isolation faults, or pack coolant loss — the network, full stop
- Structural damage into castings or battery-integrated floor — the network
- Any job whose required part or procedure is locked inside the program — the network
Your rights, and their limits
In Ontario the repair shop is your choice on every claim. An insurance company may recommend its preferred shop and often will — but it cannot require one, and that holds for a Tesla exactly as for a fifteen-year-old pickup.
What that right cannot manufacture is access. No adjuster and no customer can conjure parts, software, or procedures a manufacturer keeps inside its program; that constraint is industrial, not insurance, and it is the honest reason certain Tesla repairs must go where they must go.
The practical takeaway: choose freely, and spend the choice on a shop that tells you the truth about its limits. Ask point-blank whether they are approved, whether the parts are obtainable, and what the plan is if teardown finds structure.
The same pattern beyond Tesla
Tesla draws the questions, but the model is spreading. Several manufacturers now restrict structural procedures, battery service, and select parts to certified networks, and most publish repair procedures spelling out what may happen outside them.
So the question that matters for any EV is always the specific one: does this repair, on this vehicle, need access this shop does not have? A shop that answers it honestly is worth more than one that answers yes to everything.
The landscape shifts, too — manufacturers regularly change what they publish, sell, and permit, so this year’s answer for a given model is not last year’s. Ask about your actual car rather than trusting folklore about EVs in general.

Two practical GTA notes while you decide. Distance to an approved centre matters less than it seems — vehicles travel on flatbeds, and claims are handled by phone and photo either way. And whichever door the structural work goes through, the cosmetic remainder can still come to the shop you chose; a number of our Tesla customers arrive exactly that way, after the network finished the one part only it could do.
