Shopping Cart Dented My Car — Who Pays?

If the cart is still against the car, photograph it exactly there, then report it to the store manager before you leave and ask for an incident number. Store claims are regularly denied unless staff were clearly negligent. Under your own policy this typically falls to collision coverage, so compare the repair cost against your deductible before filing anything.

Do this before you leave the lot

Evidence in a grocery lot has a half-life of minutes. If the cart is still touching your car, photograph it in contact — that single frame outweighs any description you can give a claims department later. Get the store signage and the cart corral into the frame as well.

Then walk inside and report it while you are still on the property. Ask the manager for a written incident report and a reference number. Grocery stores and big-box lots across the GTA deal with this constantly, and a same-day report is the difference between a claim they can look up and one they cannot.

  • A photo of the cart against the car, if it is still there
  • A wide shot showing the store, the lot, and the corral
  • A close-up of the dent with something in frame for scale
  • The manager’s name and the store’s incident number
  • The date and time, recorded before you drive off

Who is actually responsible

A store is not automatically liable for a loose cart. Its general liability coverage responds to negligence — carts left drifting for hours, a broken corral, an employee pushing a train of carts into your fender — and a witnessed staff error is the version that gets paid without much argument.

A cart sailing across a windy lot with nobody near it is the version that usually gets denied. Under your own auto policy, a cart striking your parked car is generally treated as a collision loss rather than comprehensive, though insurance companies read this differently — a two-minute call to your broker before filing is worth it.

  • Whether an employee was collecting carts at the time
  • How long loose carts had been sitting out in the lot
  • Whether the corral was full, broken, or missing entirely
  • Whether anyone saw it happen, staff included
  • How quickly you reported it, and whether an incident number exists

What the dent takes to fix

Cart dents land on doors and quarters, usually as a shallow round push with the paint intact, sometimes with a grey scuff from the cart’s plastic corner. When the finish is unbroken and the metal is not creased, the panel can often be worked back to shape and refinished cleanly.

A crease or cracked paint changes the job: the metal has stretched, so it needs straightening, a thin skim to true the surface, then primer and refinish. Either way the panel blends into its neighbours, because a door sprayed in isolation shows its borders on the first bright day.

Getting a number before you decide

This is precisely the damage a free photo estimate was made for. Send a close-up and a wide shot from the lot and a written number comes back fast — often before the groceries are put away.

If the store’s insurance company wants a written estimate, ours arrives itemized in the format their adjuster already works in. And when the number lands under your deductible, we tell you that plainly instead of walking you into a claim you do not need.

Good to know

Common questions

Straight answers before you commit to anything — and a human on the phone when you want one.

The store says they are not responsible. Any recourse?

Ask them to route it through their general liability insurance company for a formal decision instead of settling for a manager’s answer at the service desk. If it is denied, your own coverage or paying directly are the practical paths.

Can a cart dent be fixed without repainting the panel?

Sometimes. When the paint is fully intact and the dent carries no crease, the metal can often be worked back without refinishing. Scraped or cracked paint always means refinishing that panel.

How long does a single-panel dent repair take?

It depends on whether the panel needs refinishing and how the colour matches out. Every estimate we write includes a written timeline, rather than a guess quoted over the phone.

What customers say

The line we hear most: “I couldn’t tell where the damage had been.”

★★★★★

Honestly, I thought my car would never look the same again — but they completely proved me wrong. I couldn’t even tell where the damage had been repaired or repainted. The paint matched perfectly, and the bodywork was flawless.
