Guelph’s dent calendar starts on Labour Day. Move-in weekend fills Gordon Street with borrowed SUVs, rented trailers, and rooftop boxes, all steered into tight campus lots and tighter side streets by drivers running on adrenaline — and the door edges, hatch corners, and fence posts collect their annual toll. The rest of the school year keeps a lower boil: residence lots, the packed rows off Stone Road, and the daily musical chairs of student-house driveways where four cars share space meant for two.
Adults contribute their own patterns. Stone Road Mall’s lot supplies cart strikes and swung doors at retail scale. Downtown, the angled spots on Wyndham put fender corners in the path of passing traffic, and the parkade pillars are patient — they win eventually. Then winter: a plough windrow across a driveway in the Ward sets up overnight, and easing a rocker panel over it leaves a crease you can read from across the street. By March, half the doors in the older neighbourhoods carry a snowbank story.
Save the metal or swap the skin — how we call it
Every dent gets the same first question: is this panel worth keeping? A shallow dish in a door skin with access behind it usually is — the metal gets eased back toward shape and finished with the thinnest skim a straight panel allows. A sharp crease that has stretched the steel, or a dent in a bonded aluminum panel that resents persuasion, may cost less to replace than to rescue.
